Celebrate National Farmers Market Week
Celebrate National Farmers Market Week with the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market Saturday, August 5th through August 12th with special activities at the Saturday Morning and Wednesday Evening markets.
During this annual celebration, market shoppers can show their appreciation and support for the market and its vendors at both the Saturday Morning market on Saturdays from 9-1 PM at the Marquette Commons, and the Wednesday Evening Street Market on Wednesdays from 5-8 PM on the 100 block of Washington Street. Shoppers can write "Thank You" cards to give to their favorite vendors, buy Market Gift Cards online to give to their friends and family, enjoy complimentary "I 'HEART' Farmers Market" temporary tattoos, and get creative with kids' coloring pages featuring market produce.
The week-long celebration will be encapsulated with a ceremonial opening of the Saturday Morning Farmers Market on August 12 at 9 AM at the Marquette Commons. Avid market shoppers know the official opening of the market is signaled by the ringing of the market bell. On Saturday, August 12, Market Manager, Sara Johnson, will be joined by six other bell ringers including Director of the Marquette DDA Tara Laase-McKinney, Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs, Representative Jenn Hill, DDA Board and Farmers Market Committee Member Lauren Rowland, as well as two of our vendor representatives. The media is encouraged to attend.
This is the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market’s 24th season with the city of Marquette's Downtown Development Authority. The Downtown Farmers Market began in 1999, and currently hosts 180+ vendors annually, including farmers, food producers, and artisans selling a wide variety of hand-grown and hand-crafted products.
National Farmers Market Week is an annual celebration of farmers markets, proclaimed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition. This membership-based nonprofit organization supports farmers markets nationwide through training, technical assistance, and network-building. This year, the campaign is centered around the essential role that farmers market operators play, both in our local food systems and in our communities. For more than fifty years, farmers markets have influenced how Americans eat, shop, and connect to their food, their farmers, and one another. Farmers markets are more than market places, they are places where neighbors learn, grow, and work together.
“Farmers markets are changing how we eat, shop, connect, and more,” said Ben Feldman, Policy Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “Farmers markets are defining their role in our communities across the country. Markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve and are a place where market operators, farmers, shoppers, and neighbors can collaborate to meet the evolving needs of their community. Throughout National Farmers Market Week 2023, we will be highlighting the ways farmers markets are making change in communities nationwide. Join us!”
